Darcy Kuronen, Former Curator of Musical Instruments at the Museum of Fine Arts
Thursday, July 25, 2024, 6-7 PM

Join Darcy Kuronen, former curator of musical instruments at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, for engaging anecdotes from his long career of working with historical instruments in collections throughout the United States, including examples at Strawbery Banke Museum. Kuronen describes how he came to work in this unusual but fascinating field and shares some of the remarkable stories behind rare instruments he discovered and researched, from the earliest American harmonica to a handsome upright piano made in 18th-century Ireland.

Darcy Kuronen worked with the collection of musical instruments at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, from 1986 to 2020, and continues to serve as volunteer curator for the historical instrument collection belonging to the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In 2000 he organized the critically acclaimed exhibition Dangerous Curves: Art of the Guitar, celebrating the diversity of guitar design over the past four centuries with 130 rare instruments from public and private collections. He is a recipient of the Frances Densmore Prize, the Curts Sachs Award from the American Musical Instrument Society, and an Alumni Achievement Award from the University of South Dakota. A specialist in early American instruments, Kuronen has written several articles and lectured widely on this subject.
